Mechanism of operation of EAS anti-theft gates
An anti-theft gate is a device designed to detect and signal the presence of an item within its field of operation. This element can be a clip attached to the goods or a sticker placed on the packaging.
EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance, or Electronic Antitheft System) is currently available in the following variants:
- By radio – in which case the label attached to the product is recognised by the gateway. The label is removed at the checkout or destroyed with a deactivator.
- Acoustic-magnetic – when the gate detects a magnetic label in its range, it signals this.
- Microwaves – the device generates two fields – one low frequency, the other microwave. A tag attached to goods that comes within range of the device triggers an alarm.
The EAS anti-theft gate is widely used in shops on the checkout line and at exits.
Another useful application of it could be an appropriate sticker on a book in the reading room.
